Understanding Paper Weight

A practical guide to choosing the right paper thickness and texture for every printing project.

What Is Paper Weight?

Paper weight refers to the thickness and density of a sheet, typically measured in grams per square meter (GSM). This measurement directly affects how a card feels in your hands, how ink absorbs into the fibers, and how the final product presents itself to the recipient.

For handmade card making and fine printing, paper weight choice is one of the most important decisions in the production process. A heavier stock conveys quality and permanence, while lighter papers offer flexibility and are ideal for layered designs or inserts.

Common Paper Weight Categories

  • 80–120 GSM: Standard writing and copy paper, suitable for inserts and interior pages.
  • 150–200 GSM: Mid-weight stock, often used for flyers, brochures, and lighter greeting cards.
  • 250–350 GSM: Premium card stock ideal for greeting cards, invitations, and letterpress printing.
  • 400+ GSM: Extra-heavy board stock used for luxury cards, business cards, and specialty packaging.

Choosing the Right Weight

The ideal paper weight depends on your project goals, the printing technique you plan to use, and the impression you want to leave with the recipient.

Letterpress Projects

Choose 300 GSM or above. Heavier stock allows for a deeper impression without warping.

Folded Greeting Cards

Opt for 250–300 GSM. This range folds cleanly and holds its shape well.

Layered Designs

Use lighter weights (120–180 GSM) for inner layers to reduce overall bulk while adding dimension.
